Careers Education
Careers Education, Advice, Information and Guidance at Cornerstone School
Careers Education, Advice, Information and Guidance is an important part of a student’s education at Cornerstone School. The world of work and the local labour market are evolving and we strive to ensure students are given the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and experiences that will enable them to be successful in their chosen careers.
Students will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of careers and the future pathways best suited to them through 1-to-1 meetings with our career’s adviser from Prospects.
During careers meetings, assemblies and other careers learning opportunities students are made aware of open days and events appropriate to their education phase. Students are also informed and given the opportunity to attend external careers events. Careers is also addressed across the Cornerstone curriculum in a holistic way, with individual subjects supporting students on linked progression pathways, key and transferable skills and labour market information.
We expect our students to progress into a range of different pathways after Year 11 including Sixth Form, College, University or Apprenticeships. They will be supported with their applications and decision making by a wide range of staff.
Cornerstone School recognises the importance of learning about employability and Key Stage 4 students will be supported to gain knowledge of the world of work and employers. This will enable them to get a better understanding of professional work environments and working life as well as improving their decision making about their future careers.
Pupil entitlement
All pupils in years 7-9 will have directed input from a Prospects careers advisor. Pupils in years 10-11 will have 1:1 interview with a careers advisor and a personalised action plan provided. This will provide all pupils with the potential to make informed choices regarding their future pathways.
Opportunities for access
A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils and/or their parents/carers where students will learn about the alternative pathways available to them in the future. We will endeavour to publish information about relevant careers fairs and open days and ensure that all Key Stage 4 pupils are able to attend at least two.
Where appropriate we will support pupils to find and undertake work experience once GCSE exams have been completed.
